Attachment-Focused Counselling in Vancouver: Healing Early Relational Wounds
The Ways We Learned to Love Started Long Before We Knew We Were Learning
Long before you had language for it, you were learning what closeness meant. Whether the people who raised you were consistent, unpredictable, distant, or overwhelmed, your nervous system took notes. It learned what to expect from connection, and it's been carrying that blueprint into every relationship since.
Attachment-focused counselling isn't about sorting you into a category or even difinitive “attachment style”. It's about understanding the patterns that formed early, and doing the slower work of building a different kind of relationship, one where you can actually experience being met, so that experience becomes part of you.
What Attachment-Focused Counselling Actually Looks Like
Attachment theory holds that our earliest relationships, with parents, caregivers, or whoever raised us, shape how safe closeness feels as adults.
When those early relationships were consistent and attuned, connection tends to feel safer later on. When they were inconsistent, frightening, or emotionally absent, connection can come to feel confusing or unsafe, even when the person in front of you now is trustworthy.
This isn't about blame, and it isn't about labeling yourself. It's about noticing the patterns, the ways you pull close or push away, the ways you read danger into safety or safety into danger, and slowly building new experience that teaches your nervous system something different.
This might look like:
Struggling to trust that people will stay, even when they've shown you they will
Feeling responsible for managing everyone else's feelings but your own
Experiencing overwhelming anxiety
Going numb, shutting down, or leaving before you can be left
Craving closeness and fearing it in the same breath
Repeating relationship patterns you don't understand and didn't choose
Feeling like your needs are "too much," or like you shouldn't have any at all
What if I already know I want counselling for an anxious or avoidant attachment style?
Often clients come in looking for counselling for anxious attachment or avoidant tendencies, or after googling or having read the book “Attached”. If these labels work for you, we can absolutely start there but if that’s not where you’re at, we can also create our own map of understanding together.
Why Work On Attachment with Our Counsellors?
Attachment is at the core of our practice!
As a team, we love weaving attachment into much of the work we do; our relational history is an integral part to how we see pain, healing and moving forward. All of our counsellors bring training, supervision and deep reverence for attachment centred work to our clients, often alongside trauma-informed, somatic, or relational approaches, depending on what fits you.
Attachment-focused work often happens through the relationship with your counsellor itself. Over time, a steady, attuned relationship with your counsellor can become a place where old patterns show up, get noticed together, and slowly shift, not from thinking differently, but because you get to experience something different, again and again, until your nervous system starts to believe it.

Frequently Asked Questions About Counselling for Attachment Wounds & Healing
-
Not necessarily. Attachment-focused work often happens in individual counselling, since it's about your own relational patterns, though it can also inform how we support couples.
-
No. You don't need a label or a diagnosis to start. Understanding your own patterns is part of the work itself, not a prerequisite for it. While we may end up using terms like “anxious attachment” or “avoidant attachment” if you resonate with those words, we might also find our own way to frame how you show up in your relationships, both past and present.
-
Attachment work tends to be slower than symptom-focused counselling, since it's about shifting something that formed over years. Many clients feel meaningful relief early on, while the deeper shifts continue over a longer arc.
