Empowering Every Brain: Neurodivergence in the Counselling Space

Some individuals who make their way to counselling may do so in response to curiosity around their experience of neurodivergence, including:

  • ADHD

  • Autism spectrum disorder

  • sensory processing issues

  • learning disabilities

This may look like having already received a diagnosis; or you may be searching for more information and understanding to help your experiences make sense.

Through a lens of inclusion and social justice, counselling in the context of neurodivergence is less about treating what has been diagnosed. It is about empowering everyone who walks through the office door – or logs into their video session – by building a space where your frustrations, curiosities and hopes are heard, respected and explored.

Following your lead, counselling can help explore and make sense or your unique experience in the following ways:

  • Find language or stories to explore & capture your whole identity

  • Explore strategies for cultivating meaningful and supportive relationships

  • Identify and discuss the history and origins of ‘expectations

  • Build awareness of how to respond to emotional cues

  • Look to past experiences to help make sense of present challenges

  • Find strategies and tools to navigate change and opportunities for growth

  • Explore possibilities for connection with other practitioners or referrals for further support
