Madison’s Approach to Counselling
There is a lot that gets in the way of connecting to ourselves! I grew up believing feelings were something to be fixed, avoided, or managed — and maybe you did too. We learn to say “I’m fine” automatically, while white-knuckling our way through, disconnected from what’s going on inside us. I believe we are meant to be more than just fine. If you’re reading this, maybe there’s a part in you that aches for something better, too. It takes courage to slow down, acknowledge, and reconnect to the parts of ourselves that we’ve needed to hold down, hide, or numb out. When you’re ready, therapy can be a great place to begin that process.
I believe healing doesn’t happen in isolation. Meaningful change happens in the mess and magic of being seen by another human, and the relationship between you and I can be a powerful place for that work.
As a counsellor, I’m not a distant observer or a neutral party. I’m genuine, direct, and emotionally present to support your growth. Together, we can slow things down. We can tease apart thoughts from physical sensations, observe patterns without judgment, and make space for the complexity of your experience. I’ve learned the value of being with our emotions, noticing them like hunger pains that signal when something’s missing or needed. In session, that might look like exploring your past, updating your coping strategies, deep conversations about meaning and purpose, learning effective communication skills, or just the space to share freely without someone trying to fix it.
We often come to therapy feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, or stuck in old patterns that are no longer serving us. Habits like people-pleasing, conflict avoidance, or reactivity keep you stuck in a familiar loop. Over time, therapy can help you to recognize how you’ve operated in the past, see whether or not that was helpful, and respond to old challenges with new awareness, insight, and choice. This work can help you stay present during difficult conversations, even when things feel uncomfortable or uncertain. Many people grow a stronger connection to their intuition, and give themselves permission take up space and want more from their life. When you take courageous steps that reflect who you are now, old patterns start to lose their grip on you, clearing the way for your fullest self to step forward.
My approach is relational, experiential, and collaborative. In practice, I blend warmth and depth, intensity and levity, honesty and humour. Sarcasm, dark humour, pop culture references, and the occasional eye-rolling dad jokes are welcome here — because therapy should be anything but cold and clinical. I’m not a teacher or an expert; my curiosity and beginner’s mind let your needs guide our work together.

When I’m not in session, you’ll find me walking the waterfront, listening to audiobooks and podcasts, browsing farmers' markets, attending community events, or at live music, fully committed to my belief that all dancing is good dancing.
My greatest fulfillment comes from watching people step further into themselves and standing with them at the edge of life’s biggest questions. If this resonates, reach out for a consult call to explore working together. I’d be honoured to be part of your process.
I welcome diverse clients of all backgrounds, orientations, and beliefs and am learning from person-centred, existential, AEDP, attachment-based, and parts-oriented approaches, taking the best bits of each to serve your unique situation. If any of those big terms sounds like gibberish, no need to Google anything (knowing these words are my job). Despite what social media leads us to believe, therapy isn’t about learning buzzwords and labels; it’s about what actually helps you.
